They originally met each after the Stranglers gig at the Top Rank but it wasn't until early '78, when Glenn Evans replied to an advert in Sounds "looking for people to form a punk band" that they started jamming together. Having decided on the name, The Undertakers, they started practicing regularly, playing along to anything they fancied with Gary Lovell drummed along on books and old suitcases, Wayne Rowe playing the bar chords and Evans playing the solo notes. It soon became pretty clear however that while the ability to play was largely irrelevant, equipment of some sort was a must so Evans decided to part-ex his woolies guitar in for a bass, and to learn to play that instead. A month or so later the Undertakers fell apart, with Glenn playing in The Noise and Gary had decided to join the Merchant navy where he was to stay for the next year or so
